Real Hoosier Appoints Former NBA Star Alan Henderson as New Assistant General Manager
Indianapolis, IN – May 19, 2025 – In a move that blends hometown pride with proven basketball pedigree, the Indiana Pacers—often referred to by fans as the “Real Hoosiers”—have announced the appointment of Alan Henderson as the team’s new Assistant General Manager. The former NBA standout and Indiana native returns to the franchise where his basketball roots run deep, marking a significant milestone in both his post-playing career and the team’s front office evolution.
Henderson, 52, brings with him a wealth of basketball knowledge and leadership experience. A former Indiana University standout under the legendary coach Bob Knight, Henderson went on to enjoy a successful 12-year career in the NBA, primarily with the Atlanta Hawks. Known for his rebounding tenacity, basketball IQ, and quiet determination, Henderson is now poised to help lead the Pacers into a new era, this time from the executive suite.
Homegrown Talent Returns
Born and raised in Indianapolis, Henderson’s ties to Indiana basketball are deeply personal. He was a high school star at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, where he first showcased the skills that would make him one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. At Indiana University, Henderson was a consistent force for the Hoosiers, earning All-Big Ten honors and graduating as one of the program’s all-time leading rebounders and scorers.
His success at IU paved the way for his selection in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Over the course of his career, Henderson played for the Hawks, Mavericks, Cavaliers, and 76ers, averaging 7.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. In 1998, he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player, highlighting his work ethic and commitment to personal development.
From Court to Front Office
After retiring from professional basketball in 2007, Henderson took a deliberate approach to transitioning into a post-playing career. He completed a degree in biology at Indiana and later earned a business degree from Columbia University, further equipping himself for life beyond the hardwood.
Over the past decade, Henderson has been involved in a variety of business ventures and community initiatives while also serving in advisory roles for basketball programs at the high school and collegiate levels. His appointment to the Pacers’ front office is both a return to familiar ground and a bold step forward into high-level basketball management.
“Alan embodies everything we value in our organization—integrity, basketball excellence, and a commitment to Indiana values,” said Kevin Pritchard, President of Basketball Operations for the Pacers. “His experience on the court, combined with his business acumen and understanding of team culture, makes him an ideal fit for our front office. We’re thrilled to welcome him home.”
A Vision for the Future
In his new role as Assistant General Manager, Henderson will work closely with Pritchard and General Manager Chad Buchanan. His responsibilities will include player development, talent evaluation, and overseeing scouting operations—areas where his firsthand experience as a player will be invaluable.
“I’m honored to join the Pacers organization in this capacity,” Henderson said during his introductory press conference. “This is home for me. Indiana basketball shaped who I am, and I’m excited to give back in a meaningful way. I look forward to helping build a championship culture rooted in hard work, accountability, and community connection.”
Henderson’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Pacers, who are in the midst of retooling their roster around a young, dynamic core. With standout guard Tyrese Haliburton and other emerging talents, the team is looking to return to contention in
