Russell Wilson is ‘excited for what’s next’ after being cut by the Denver Broncos.
The former Super Bowl champion will now become a free agent.
Russell Wilson’s tenure with the Denver Broncos has ended.
Wilson, 35, will a free agent after the NFL announced his release on Monday.
Wilson, a Super Bowl champion, will now be eligible to join another team before the new season begins this summer.
Wilson expressed gratitude to Broncos Country via a social media statement. “Over the last two years, you have welcomed my family and me with open arms and accepted us as members of the Denver community. This city will forever have a particular place in my heart. Our family grew up here, making many experiences and friendships, and developing relationships that will last a lifetime.”
Wilson went on to thank his teammates “for being there through it all” during his two seasons with the NFL team.
“There are so many moments I cherish because of you and I am blessed for the impact you have made on my life,” Wilson wrote. “I am beyond grateful for all of you and to have been able to run out as your teammate was an honor.”
Wilson was benched late last season after a turbulent year with the squad, which many predicted would be his last.
During Wilson’s two seasons with the Broncos, the team went 13-21 and missed the playoffs both times. Denver has not been to the playoffs since winning the Super Bowl in 2016 with former quarterback Peyton Manning.
Wilson’s original contract with Denver was for five years and $242.6 million. According to ESPN, releasing Wilson before his deal expires will cost the Broncos $85 million over the next two seasons.
