The 22-year-old signed a new contract with a release clause of £35m in January, before joining the Bundesliga side in the second half of the season.
The Dutchman probably expected more after his good pre-season performance, but he only made 15 appearances in the Premier League, starting just one.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino opted to play Levi Colville out of position rather than give Maassen the chance to run up the left flank with
Ben Chilwell and Mark Cucurella injured. After arriving at Dortmund, Maassen quickly established himself as a key player at the club,
playing a key role in the Champions League quarter-final victory over Atletico Madrid.
The left-back is currently preparing for Wednesday night’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain,
and his father has confirmed that Maassen wants a permanent move to Germany. . “We are working to stay at the club (Dortmund),
” he told Dutch newspaper Votbal International.”Each club will have to fight internally. Ian is doing well here, but he hasn’t been doing well at
Chelsea since his move.“So much of this club revolves around money and sometimes it seems like that is more important than the club’s profits.
“There are other options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund was a good restart. And look at the players from there: [Jude] Bellingham, [Erling] Haaland.
Maassen returned to Chelsea last summer after a loan spell at Burnley, where he won the title and was named in the team of
the year under Vincent Kompany. The Dutchman turned down a permanent move to Turf Moor this summer, despite Chelsea and Burnley agreeing a deal worth £31.5m.
Maassen appears to have made his final appearance in a Chelsea shirt and his future is up to the club.
