Pat Nevin says he is disappointed to see Conor Gallagher in a Tottenham shirt but admits the midfielder would suit Spurs better than Chelsea.
As the summer transfer window approaches, reports continue to intensify that Gallagher is set to leave London for Tottenham.
The Sun reported last week that Spurs were aware of the need to raise funds from Chelsea by the end of June and
planned to sign the midfielder at the start of the transfer window. The publication adds that the Lilywhites’ plan is for
the England international to qualify before pre-season training begins.
A few days ago, HITC reported that Gallagher and his agent have agreed that his time at Stamford Bridge is likely to end this summer.
According to reports, the 23-year-old wants to remain with his boyhood club, and manager Mauricio Pochetinho is also keen to keep him,
but the club’s financial difficulties and client contract situation are a major concern. Considering that, the player’s aides are aware that a sale is likely.
Nevin admitted Gallagher’s situation may be beyond Pochettino’s control and suggested the midfielder could develop under manager Ange Postecoglou.
The expert told Grosvenor Sport (via Metro): “In an ideal world where all finances were balanced, Chelsea would never want to sell Conor Gallagher.
That’s unthinkable, unthinkable. do not have. It’s pretty much the same as when Mason Mount left. But if finances say you have to do it, you have to do it.
“This may be incredibly difficult for many Chelsea fans because, as someone said to me the other day, this is like selling the family silverware.
Chelsea are selling part of their stadium and hotel. We’re going to sell it, and it’s a little disappointing, but the accountant is really in control.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he brought in a player like Conor Gallagher, who signed for Spurs.
That would obviously be particularly painful for Chelsea fans, but regardless of which player he represents.
I would say he’s probably better.”The way he plays is a perfect fit for Spurs.
“The transfer situation at Chelsea is really very sensitive because we don’t know who is making the decisions and at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about.”
As for the manager, he will want to make changes, let a number of players go and bring in more experience in certain areas.
“But he’s definitely not making decisions. That’s very common in the modern game, so it’s a bit of a delicate touch.”
Postekorg is known to have had his eye on Gallagher for some time, with Tottenham having been planning to sign the midfielder since last summer.
So while a bid from the Lilywhites for the 23-year-old is imminent this summer, Chelsea could choose to sell him to someone other than Spurs.
