Argentina’s Show Sport reported that Enzo Fernandes may need surgery for an abdominal problem called an “inguinal hernia.” It looks painful.
Chelsea will reportedly consider the matter after this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.
Enzo rested last night to be fully fit for Saturday’s match at Wembley. The team played very well without him,
so the question may have arisen for Mauricio Pochettino how best to use his compatriot.
We’ve heard a lot about this stomach issue, and it seems like the number of games he’s played this season has only made it worse.
This is also due to the decline in the quality of his performances throughout the season.
The surgery will keep him sidelined for a while, but if it were done now it would likely end his season.
However, this means he can take time off and return for a full preseason. Delaying this decision until the end of the campaign would have an even greater impact on next season.
The latest example at Chelsea is Reece James. He returned from injury multiple times without surgery due to repeated issues,
but this season he finally gave up and went under the knife. Given that Enzo has signed a huge contract and is expected to be the future of this club,
it would be foolish to risk his long-term future for a relatively meaningless final game of the season.
Fans who believe that surgery is always a safe option are also wrong. This is always a risk,
but there’s a good reason why it’s usually a last resort. If you can fully recover without it, it is always the preferred option.
