Chelsea have reportedly refused to rule out a summer move for the striker, who could be a very cheap replacement for Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have had a disastrous season domestically, with their head coach facing backlash after
spending more than £400m on new players last summer. The Argentine has been ridiculed by fans on numerous
occasions during the 2023/2024 season, with Chelsea currently languishing in mid-table, with Chelsea set to miss out on European qualification.
Gary Neville also branded them a “billion pound bottle” after losing to Liverpool in the League Cup final, but the FA Cup
appears to be their only chance of redemption this season. The former Spurs manager is currently under
pressure as Pochettino prepares for the crucial FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, which could go a long way towards the success of the season.
Chelsea are reportedly considering a replacement manager if they decide to part ways with Pochettino, but whatever
decision is made, the team still has a summer market to deal with. There remain some obvious weaknesses. One
of them is a centre-forward, and the Blues could be without a striker with 25 or more goals a season who could take
the team to the next level. They have been rumored to have several hot options, with Toney and Osimhen reportedly on Chelsea’s target list.
Osimhen’s contract with Napoli includes a £113m release clause, making him the more expensive option, but Toney is expected to leave Brentford for around £60m.
However, Chelsea may need to be wary of potential PSR and FFP violations as surrounding clubs continue to face sanctions.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson could be a potential ‘bargain’, according to journalist Dean Jones, writing for Sportslens.
The Englishman has been plagued by injuries this season, but has been a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad for the 2022/23 season,
and could leave on the cheap as his contract expires next year.
According to Jones, Chelsea have not ruled out signing Wilson this summer, and
it is believed they could have been ready to sign him as early as January. “Sources have confirmed that Chelsea rate
Wilson highly and would not rule out a new move for him if they decide to consider cheaper attacking alternatives to Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney.” wrote Jones.
“It was said that the player was ready for such a transfer in January.”
Although described by Howe as “fantastic”, Wilson’s only obstacles are recent injuries and age, with the 32-year-old not suited for long-term play.
