Last month, it was announced that manager Thomas Tuchel would be leaving Bayern at the end of the season,
leaving the German giants without a trophy for the first time since 2012. His team lost in
the German Cup to a third-tier club and are 10 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga with eight games remaining.
They still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League, but even if they beat Arsenal in the quarter-finals, they will have to face favorites
Manchester City or Real Madrid in the semi-finals. It is clear that we are facing a difficult lottery result.
Leverkusen head coach and former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has become one of
the first candidates to take charge at the Allianz Arena. He should have been the club’s main target.
The Spaniard has had an incredible run with Leverkusen, with the team remaining unbeaten in all competitions this season,
with a 38-game unbeaten run. Liverpool, another of Alonso’s former clubs, are also very interested in him,
but he could still remain at the BayArena at the start of next season.
However, Italian outlet La Repubblica reported via talkSPORT that Conte is actually a “first name” on
Bayern’s managerial target list and is considered a “priority” appointment. The 54-year-old has been out of work
since being sacked by Spurs almost a year ago after an unhappy 17 months in north London.
One of the most successful managers of his generation, Conte won four Serie A titles with Juventus and Inter Milan,
and won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017.
Despite his time at Tottenham having a very detrimental outcome, he is still highly valued and
Bayern reportedly approached him a few months ago, although negotiations were not easy.
A move to Munich would reunite Conte with former Spurs stars Harry Kane and Eric Dier,
one of the few players the Italian has been able to make the most of.
The England captain has scored 43 goals and provided 14 assists in 75 appearances under the manager,
far fewer games than in his first season at Bayern.
