One of Chelsea’s latest signings is hoping for success at Stamford Bridge.
Last summer, Chelsea agreed to sign Kendry Paes from Independiente del Valle for £17 million,
with the midfielder set to join the Blues at the age of 18. Paes recently spoke in an interview
with Diario Expreso about his ambition to one day become the best soccer player in the world.
The 16-year-old has already won five caps for Ecuador and looks set to reach the top.
Paes was only 18 years old and only played for Chelsea, but the young IDV has been training with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Paes set himself an ambitious goal of becoming the best football player.
“I always want to be the best,” said the Ecuadorian international. “I will do my best to win first place.
I calmly accept everything I have experienced. I didn’t really care.
“I never thought I would have the opportunity to show off my soccer so soon.
“I’m focused on Independiente and I’m happy with what I’ve achieved, but like any professional footballer, I want to win everything with the team.”
His agent Manuel Sierra did just that, saying in January that his client had the potential to win the Ballon d’Or.
To be honest, it’s too early to tell. After all, Paes is not yet 18 years old and he has not yet played in Europe.
But given his trajectory so far, one would expect him to be at least a very good player.
It all depends on how he develops at Chelsea, which is not necessarily the best environment for a young player looking to develop.
Of course, the Blues have never been afraid to spend money in the transfer market,
and the arrival of new players could clearly get in the way of those already at the club.
But Paes clearly has a lot of talent and I hope it doesn’t go to waste.
