There have been rumors of a relationship between Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Chelsea.
We think Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, 26, is one of the players hoping this story doesn’t come true at Stamford Bridge.
Mauricio Pochettino is currently the manager of Chelsea. But there’s no question that his team is losing on the field.
So will Roberto De Zerbi quit his job as Brighton manager and move to west London next season?
The Guardian reported this week that Chelsea are considering Ruben Amorim and De Zerbi as potential replacements for Pochettino.
He added that the club are considering waiting until the summer before reconsidering Pochettino’s position as manager.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go before that happens. However, we think it would be a disaster for Sanchez if De Zerbi becomes Chelsea’s next manager.
Sanchez previously played under De Zerbi at the Amex, but Brighton allowed him to be sold to Chelsea for £25m last summer.
The Spanish gloveman was once Brighton’s number one between the sticks, but has lost his starting place under De Zerbi.
As it turned out, the 26-year-old goalkeeper was not able to put the ball at his feet enough to suit his style of football.
De Zerbi, described as “excellent” by Luton Town manager Rob Edwards (Luton Today), has a unique approach as a manager.
From what he has seen of Sanchez in his first season at Chelsea, there is a clear weakness when playing from the back.
Even if De Zerbi walks through the door, I don’t have much faith in Sanchez’s chances of playing regularly.
Speaking to The Athletic in May, De Zerbi revealed where Sanchez fits into his plans at Brighton. He said:
There’s nothing I can do. Of course if he wants to [stay next season], then I’ll decide on the initial structure.
Robert is a great guy and a very nice guy. I like him and we have a good relationship, but my job is to decide on the composition of the first team and
I have always been honest and accurate with everyone.
Sanchez is currently in a fierce battle for the lead with his teammate Djordje Petrovic.
His potential is fading under De Zerbi’s management.
