It may have been a quiet January transfer window by Chelsea’s crazy standards, but Mauricio Pochettino is preparing to sell for his summer signings.
The club is currently hampered by FFP regulations and owner Todd Boley has spent more than £1 billion since taking over the club ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Despite missing out on the League Cup final against Liverpool this season, the Blues will likely have a lot of work to do to re-establish themselves as title contenders.
They traveled to Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday and lost 4-1 to remain in 10th place.
Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva is set to be released in the summer as he needs to raise money before signing a contract with Pochettino.
Silva, who turns 40 in September, is out of contract this summer and the club are willing to sacrifice experience to free him from wages, with an extension in doubt.
According to Athletic, four homegrown players are set to be sold, which will significantly boost Chelsea’s FFP profile.
The futures of Connor Gallagher, Jan Maatsen, Armando Broja and Trevor Chalobah appear to remain uncertain despite the closure of the January transfer window.
Gallagher was heavily linked with Tottenham last month and Chelsea’s London rivals appear to have rejected a £50m bid.
However, with less than 18 months left on his contract, the club could sell him next summer or lose him on a free transfer in 2025.
The club also gave Maatsen an exception. The left-back joined Borussia Dortmund on loan after agreeing a new contract that includes a £35m release clause,
with the Bundesliga club now having the option to make the move permanent in June. Broza also left the club and was loaned to Fulham on deadline day.
The Cottagers will initially receive £4m, but this figure could be reduced depending on performance. The Albanian is not expected to stay at Chelsea next season.
