Carter Starocci Cements Legacy as College Wrestling Elite by Winning the Prestigious Hodge Trophy

University Park, PA – Penn State Wrestling’s Carter Starocci has solidified his place among the sport’s greatest by winning the 2025 Hodge Trophy, widely regarded as the most prestigious individual honor in college wrestling. The honor, often referred to as the “Heisman of Wrestling,” is awarded annually to the top wrestler in the nation, recognizing not only technical skill and dominance on the mat but also sportsmanship, leadership, and overall contributions to the sport.

Starocci’s victory comes after an exceptional season that saw him capture his third NCAA title in as many years, further establishing his dominance in the 174-pound weight class. The native of Erie, Pennsylvania, was virtually untouchable during the season, finishing with an undefeated record and a series of dominant performances at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa. His relentless pace, exceptional mat awareness, and ability to control his opponents from start to finish have made him a standout athlete at the highest level of college wrestling.

“This is an unbelievable honor,” Starocci said after receiving the award. “I’ve worked so hard for this, and to be mentioned among the greatest to ever step on the mat is humbling. This isn’t just my accomplishment – it’s a reflection of the incredible support I’ve received from my coaches, teammates, and family.”

Starocci’s accomplishments at Penn State extend beyond his individual triumphs. Under the guidance of legendary head coach Cael Sanderson, Starocci has been a key component in the Nittany Lions’ rise to prominence, contributing to multiple national titles and solidifying the program’s legacy as a powerhouse in collegiate wrestling.

With his Hodge Trophy win, Starocci joins an elite group of wrestlers who have taken home the prestigious award, further elevating his reputation as one of the best to ever compete at the college level. As he prepares for his future endeavors, his legacy as one of college wrestling’s all-time greats is now firmly cemented.
