In a heartfelt Senior Night ceremony at the University of Florida’s Exactech Arena, senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. reflected on his decision to return for his final collegiate season, calling it “the best decision of my life.” Clayton Jr.’s performance on the court underscored his sentiment, as he led the No. 5 Florida Gators to a commanding 90-71 victory over Ole Miss.
The evening was charged with emotion as Clayton Jr., alongside fellow seniors Will Richard and Alijah Martin, was honored in a pre-game ceremony attended by family, friends, and a supportive Gators fanbase. The trio’s contributions were pivotal in the game’s outcome, with Clayton Jr. scoring 23 points, including five three-pointers, Richard adding 10 points, and Martin contributing 13.
Reflecting on the significance of the night, Clayton Jr. expressed deep gratitude for his time with the Gators. “Emotions were high, obviously. Been here two years, made basically family here,” he said. “It’s always going to be a family here with the coaching staff and all the fans. Just a lot of love.”
The game itself showcased the seniors’ leadership and the team’s cohesion. After a competitive first half, the Gators unleashed a 14-0 run early in the second half, effectively sealing the game. Sophomore Alex Condon also delivered an impressive performance with 17 points and 15 rebounds, marking his second consecutive double-double.
Head Coach Todd Golden praised the team’s effort and highlighted the seniors’ impact on the program. “It was a spectacular evening to send off our seniors, and what a way to finish off their career in the O’Dome,” Golden remarked. “I’m so extremely proud of everybody. The commitment and dedication everyone has been putting in, and the attention to detail—it’s really paying off.”
The victory not only celebrated the seniors’ contributions but also bolstered the Gators’ momentum heading into the postseason. With the regular season concluded, Florida secured the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament, earning a double-bye and positioning themselves as strong contenders for the conference title.
Clayton Jr.’s decision to return for his senior year has evidently paid dividends, both personally and for the Gators. His leadership and performance have left an indelible mark on the program, making Senior Night a fitting celebration of his collegiate journey.
