Indiana University has officially appointed Darian DeVries as the 31st head coach of its men’s basketball program. DeVries, 49, brings 24 years of Division I coaching experience, including successful tenures at Drake and West Virginia. His teams have achieved a combined record of 169-68, with notable NCAA Tournament appearances and conference championships.
In a move that underscores the close-knit nature of college basketball, Tucker DeVries, son of Coach Darian DeVries, is anticipated to transfer to Indiana. Tucker, a 6-foot-7 wing, began his collegiate career at Drake under his father’s guidance, earning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year honors twice. He transferred to West Virginia for the 2024-25 season but was limited to eight games due to a shoulder injury. Despite this setback, he averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, showcasing his scoring prowess with a 47.3% three-point shooting accuracy.
Tucker’s expected move to Indiana aligns with his father’s recent appointment and is seen as a significant boost to the Hoosiers’ roster. His scoring ability and experience are anticipated to contribute positively to Indiana’s performance in the upcoming season.
The coaching transition has also led to roster changes at Indiana. Forward Mackenzie Mgbako has entered the transfer portal and is considering the NBA draft, citing the coaching changes as a factor in his decision. During his two seasons with the Hoosiers, Mgbako averaged 12.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
As the transfer portal remains active until April 22, further roster adjustments are anticipated. Coach DeVries is expected to leverage his extensive coaching experience and recruiting acumen to attract additional talent to Indiana, aiming to build a competitive team for the upcoming season.
The DeVries duo’s move to Indiana has sparked discussions about the potential impact on the Hoosiers’ performance in the Big Ten Conference. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this father-son partnership will influence the team’s dynamics and success in the 2025-26 season.
