Penn State wrestling, under the leadership of head coach Cael Sanderson, has strategically utilized the transfer portal to bolster its roster, enhancing the team’s prospects for continued dominance in collegiate wrestling. Following their 10th national championship in 12 years during the 2022-23 season, the Nittany Lions have added several high-caliber athletes to address key lineup needs.
One of the most notable additions is three-time All-American Bernie Truax from Cal Poly. Truax has demonstrated exceptional versatility, securing fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships across three different weight classes: 174 pounds in 2021, 184 pounds in 2022, and 197 pounds in 2023. At Penn State, Truax is anticipated to compete at 184 pounds, allowing three-time NCAA champion Aaron Brooks to move up to 197 pounds. This strategic shift aims to strengthen the upper weights, complementing the talents of fellow champions such as 174-pounder Carter Starocci and heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet.
In the lightweight division, the Nittany Lions have secured All-American Aaron Nagao from Minnesota. Nagao, who finished fifth at the 2023 NCAA Championships and was a Big Ten finalist at 133 pounds, is expected to fill the void left by the departure of two-time NCAA champion Roman Bravo-Young. Nagao’s impressive performance, including a notable ride-out of Bravo-Young during the Big Ten finals, underscores his potential to make a significant impact in Penn State’s lineup.
Additionally, Penn State has added Mitchell Mesenbrink from California Baptist. A two-time Wisconsin state champion and the 12th overall recruit in the class of 2022, Mesenbrink wrestled at 165 pounds during his redshirt year. His arrival introduces healthy competition in the middleweights, particularly with returning starter Alex Facundo, and adds depth to the team’s roster.
These strategic acquisitions through the transfer portal reflect Coach Sanderson’s commitment to maintaining Penn State’s wrestling excellence. By addressing specific lineup needs and enhancing overall team depth, the Nittany Lions are well-positioned to pursue their third consecutive national title in the upcoming season.
