The 25-year-old returned to the starting line-up against the Magpies on Monday night after goals from Nicholas Jackson,
Cole Palmer and Mikhail Mudryk secured a vital three points at Stamford Bridge.
After injuring his ankle in December, the Spaniard has worked tirelessly to return to full fitness as the Blues approach the end of the season.
After the match at the Bridge, Cucurella explained that it had been a tough journey for him,
but expressed his joy at being able to contribute to the team in his first start since suffering an injury last year.
“It’s not easy to be an athlete and get injured. It’s tough,” Cucurella began. “I worked hard and tried to put everything into my work.
I’m very happy to have the opportunity to play and to help the team and stay on the field. I hope this is the first of many.
“I think the team played very well. Although we had the upper hand in the match,
we easily conceded two goals, so I think we need to improve on that.
We deserved the win and I’m very happy for the team.”
The defender was pleased with the positive result but admitted Cucurella needs to continue developing ahead of
Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final match against Leicester City. He continued: “We need to improve a little bit.
We conceded a few easy goals, but I think that’s part of the game.
“We have to work hard and maintain this level.
If we stay together and stay focused, we will be able to compete with many teams.”
By the end of the season we should have improved a little more and won a lot of games.
We need to move up the rankings.
We have a lot of energy and are focused on this game (against Leicester).
We have a great chance to play again at Wembley for the second time this season and I think that’s very important for us.
“We will do our best.
The win against Newcastle is important because it will boost our confidence ahead of Sunday’s game. The team is ready.”
